As we set new goals for the year, it’s important for us to reflect, take stock of and prioritise our wellbeing. 2020 was a challenging year for so many people. It may have been the year where your wellbeing took a hit or the year that forced you to take action and invest in habits that boosted your wellbeing.
In this article, I’ll be sharing 7 apps that have had a profound effect on my wellbeing and helping you to think about areas of your life where you can give yourself a boost.
Let’s start by looking at a wellbeing wheel and the different factors that contribute to our overall wellbeing.
Looking at these categories, here are a few questions for you think about:
- What behaviours served your wellbeing in 2020?
- What are the habits or actions you want to implement in 2021?
- What does it look like for you to take care of yourself?
- Do you know what energises you or fills your cup?
- How are you going to invest in your wellbeing this year?

Last year, I found that an intentional use of technology was crucial for my wellbeing.
Here are a few apps for you to check out.
FitOn: I can’t imagine 2020 without this excellent app! What I love the most about it is the huge variety of workouts available. You can create a personalised plan depending on your health goal, follow celebrity workouts, join a live class, the list is endless. All of this is available on the free plan so it’s really a no brainer if you don’t have the opportunity to go to the gym.
I also love the recent meditation updates. As someone who struggles with sleeping, the sleep meditations arrived at a perfect time.
Medito: I’ve tried meditation in the past but I’ve never been able to stick to it. Thanks to my amazing friend Samiha, I decided to give it another go. I tried a lot of apps in the process – Calm, Headspace, Serenity, Insight Timer, Sabr – before I found Medito.
The app has a clean interface, it’s free plus it has a variety of meditation classes that caters to different people (from beginners to people who are experienced with meditating). The app currently has a January challenge so now is the perfect time for you to start.
My Vision Board – Visualise Your Dreams: I stumbled on this vision board app after experimenting with lots of apps that just didn’t quite hit the mark. If you don’t want to create a physical vision board, this app makes it easy. It turns your images and goals into a slide show. The winning factor was that I could also have my affirmations in the same app. You can choose from a huge list of affirmations or create your own and record them in your voice.
It’s simple, easy and genuinely one of my favourite apps on my phone. It’s a wonderful to keep track of your vision and remind yourself of how far you’ve come .
Al Quran (Tafsir & by Word): Spiritual wellbeing is a huge contributor to our overall wellbeing as Muslims. And this is one of the best Quran apps out there!
Alhamdulilah, the planner feature helped me with my goal of being consistent with the Quran last year. I love the different Tafsirs available on the app and being able to write notes as I go through them. If you want to improve your understanding of the Quran there is a word by word analysis feature and you can also improve your Tajweed with the colour coded Tajweed option.
TickTick: This app is my go to digital planner! It helps me keep an overview of everything I’m doing. The Pomodoro and Stopwatch functions have really helped me with concentration and productivity.
Evernote: A couple of years ago when I was at sixth form, Evernote was my life! But then I stopped using it for a couple of years. Now I’ve gotten to the point where having different note taking systems was making life difficult. I love the clean interface of Evernote and how easy I can find my notes and sort them into different notebooks.
If you need something for long term organisation, this would be my recommendation because I definitely couldn’t crack Notion.
Samsung Health: Shout out to all my Android family, this one is specifically for us. Sleep Quality is something I want to focus on this year. Instead of downloading another app, I’m using the Samsung Health app. Data doesn’t lie, and seeing data for example on the consistency of my bed time has allowed me to be conscious of where I need to make changes.

- One You Couch to 5K , Keep Trainer and Keep Yoga: I used these apps in 2019 but FitOn has displaced them. Nevertheless, they are great apps!
- CastBox – Is my go to app for podcasts. One action I’m definitely carrying into 2021 is going for long walks or cooking as I listen to a podcast. You can read up on my favourite podcasts of the year here.
- YouTube – cooking is under rated when it comes to the impact on wellbeing. Living in Nigeria in 2020 allowed me to have so much fun with food and cooking. Check out Sisi Jemimah‘s page for some fantastic recipes.
