During Ramadan last month, I finally took the plunge and changed the name of my blog from MuslimGirlJournal to myrihla. It has been a long time coming and I wanted to explain the new name and address questions about the blog going forward.
How MuslimGirlJournal started
MuslimGirlJournal started on the eve of my second year exams. I had a rough first year and my second year had been going relatively well until three months before my exams when things began to fall apart (there will be a whole series on my university experience at a later date). This blog started the day that I knew I would definitely be retaking my second year. It was a hard reality for me to accept and MuslimGirlJournal started in the midst of tears. Writing has always been a means for me to process experiences and I wrote through the pain which is why mental health has been a huge component of this blog. If I didn’t fail my second year of university, there is a great likelihood that this blog would not exist today.
At the time, I chose the name MuslimGirlJournal because I wanted something that would reflect my Muslim identity and my love for journaling. It made sense to put those two words together and voila – MuslimGirlJournal.
Over the past two years since I started, I have been blessed with the opportunity to connect with a wonderful community both online and off-line. And for that I will always be grateful! After finishing final year exams, I knew that I definitely wanted to change the name because I was opening a new chapter and I wanted something that would be long lasting for whatever phase I would be in later in life.
Explaining the name myrihla
The journal aspect in MuslimGirlJournal represented me sharing details of my journey and reflections so I wanted something along those lines for the new name. I decided on the title Rihla which means journey in Arabic but unfortunately that domain was not available and neither was Rihlatee which means my journey. Instead, I meshed English and Arabic together to create myrihla, which means my journey.
The name of the blog might have changed but you can expect the same content and a few new introductions.
myrihla is a lifestyle and personal development blog for women focusing on faith, mental health and self development. My intention through this blog is to create a space for women to have impactful conversations that make us reflect, improve our relationship with ourselves, our community and most importantly our Creator.
What you can expect on myrihla
Movement Monday: A fortnightly segment where I put the spotlight on women across all walks of life with the intention of providing a space to learn from these incredible women and their achievements.
Mental Health Monday: Is another fortnightly segment where I will be talking about mental health, actions that I implement in my lives and general knowledge that I learn from my readings and events I attend. It is important to me that we talk about mental health across the spectrum because it is something we all have to contend with.
A Week In The Life Of Series: I am excited to launch this series where I will be trying out different things from the lives of people that inspire me and sharing the process with you. Self inventory and development is a continual process and I have benefited from learning about the lives of people like The Prophet Peace Be Upon Him and more currently, public figures like Oprah.
Audio Journals: My audio journals are short reflections between 2 – 3 minutes where I share daily musings and thoughts.
Friday Favourites: Are posts where I will be sharing articles, podcasts, videos and books that I have benefited from during the week that I think you would be interested in too.
Lastly we have,
Books and Documentary reviews: Reading has been central to my journey and development over the years. So this blog could not exist without me sharing my thoughts on books and documentaries that I find interesting.
I am excited for this new chapter and thank you to everyone that has been on this journey with me so far. May Allah protect our bond and grant us lives that are pleasing to him Ameen.
I’ve also added a get to know me page here.
