Earlier in the year, I wrote a post for Amaliah about social media titled “Social Media Footprints Lasts for Eternity… Are You Watching Your Footprints?”. and I felt the need to write the post following an intense social media backlash against a YouTuber. The conversations at the time were extremely disturbing and it became apparent that a lot of Muslims have cognitive dissonance on the rules that apply to our speech in real life and on social media.
I definitely share Subhi’s sentiment that Muslims participate in backbiting and gossiping under the guise of ‘giving advice’. We have Muslim YouTubers reacting to each other negatively, or even worse individuals creating videos to expose the lives of Muslim YouTubers. People are feeding off negativity and speak to each other online neither with empathy or concern. Where is the compassion and love in the way that we deal with each other?
It’s so important for us to be careful about what we share and do online considering the grave consequences for backbiting in our religion. Rarely do people research information before offering their opinions online, which in most cases is unwarranted. We have a long way to go in adopting the adab of the Prophet SAW in how we deal with one another. Do watch Subhi Taha’s video below on the topic and let me know what you think.
That’s a hashtag of sin. That’s Shaitan’s hashtag.
OMG! How true! but it just speaks to where we are today as an ummah. What will it take to wake us up? Sincere duah time! and LOOK in the Mirror! One of the ways against us is to waste our time! Social media does quite a lot of that! (May Allah be ever merciful with the believers, aameen thumma aameen.
