Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on Channel 4 Discussing Race, Feminism & Gender Equality

Recently Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was on Channel 4 for an interview where she discussed the issues of race, feminism and gender equality. Chimamanda is one of those authors that I think every reader should be familiar with, but if for some reason or another this is your first time hearing about her here is a brief intro.

Arguably one of the world’s best writers, she is a Nigerian novelist and a non-fiction writer. Her works include the widely read, ‘We Should All Be Feminists,’ ‘Purple Hibiscus’ ‘Americannah’ and the acclaimed ‘Half of a Yellow Sun.’ Below are the 1-minute excerpts of the interview from the Channel 4 Facebook page. Definitely worth watching!

Chimamanda shares some of her thoughts on race and identity in the US and Nigeria.

“Race is America’s original sin.”

On Gender Equality and Feminism

“Gender expectations can hold people back in a very terrible way…mostly women, but also men.”

Chimamanda explains why natural hair is political for black women.

“In some ways, women are not allowed to be angry – particularly black women.”
